By George! Let's have a picnic!

April 23rd, 2009

Happy St George’s Day!

No sooner do we see the first signs of spring, than summer decides to hint it might be on its way. Rejoice!

If there’s the slightest chance of a warm front on the horizon, us Brits will don shorts, light barbecues or head off to a big open space for a jolly pleasant picnic. And why shouldn’t we? Before you know it, summer will officially be here, it’ll be cold and wet, and we’ll be stuck in the house watching re-runs of Wimbledon finals because it’s cold and wet in SW19 too.

So to help you enjoy whatever sunshine we’re blessed with this year, Belvoir Fruit Farms has five snazzy picnic rucksacks to give away. These nifty holdalls come with crockery and cutlery for two, plus a special insulated compartment to keep your cold stuff cold or your hot stuff hot (but probably not at the same time – we don’t recommend chucking some hot jacket potatoes in a bag of ice and hoping for the best).

But as with all our competitions, winning will require a little bit of thought.

We’d love for you tell us about your perfect picnic. Who’d be there: Her Majesty? Shakespeare? Burt Bacharach? Where would your picnic take place: Hyde park? By the Seine? On the moon? And perhaps you’ll let us know what delicious and refreshing drink you’d take with you. (Clue: it’s a no brainer.)

The choice, of course, is yours. It doesn’t have to be an essay – just tap a few short sentences into the comment box below and and we’ll get the Belvoir Fruit Farms team to pick their five favourites. Make them as topical or irreverent as you like – it’s meant to be fun! (If you’re desperate to read the full terms and conditions, they’re here.)

Good luck to all.

OOOOh picnics…great!!! Sitting in the sunshine (or damn! I missed it….that was last week … sooo sitting in the rain…we are british after all) and enjoying food and nibbles you perhaps wouldn’t eat at home!!
Who could I picnic with?? Oh Allen Carr for the fun :o ) My Chemical Romance for the music :o ) Katie Price and Peter Andre for the entertainment (I love a good punch-up don’t you?…or if the budget is a bit limited then maybe Kerry Katona and Mark Crofts!!??) Then Sir Alan Sugar to get the drinks in (Champagne with a hint of blueberry cordial (courtesy of Belvoir of course) and finally Stuart Pearce for the intelligent football based conversation while Gerard Way (lead singer from My Chemical Romance) takes a break from singing to peel me grapes and feed me strawberries. Where??? On a deserted beach in the caribbean. (yes I know what you are thinking….what happened to my ‘british picnic’? Well sod that I am not going to have my dream picnic in the rain am I now ;o)

At my picnic would be my 8 year old son, who will always fill any gap in conversation, even 5 seconds is enough for him. Invited guests would be my Grandma, as there are lots of questions I should have asked her while she was alive, Queen Elizabeth I – a true Brit and one of my icons. Jamie Oliver to sort out the food as I’ll be too busy socialising, Paul Weller for eye candy and musical talent, Siegfried Sassoon so I can talk about WWI and for a bit of culture. The venue would be Lancing College in West Sussex – a beautiful place for a picnic that I’ve visited since I was little. Drinks would be Belvoir – of course – need you ask?

My perfect picnic would take place at the top of Arthur’s Seat, as the view is amazing and we’d work up an appetite getting there.
I’d like to take Philip Larkin as I’m a huge fan of his poetry, Thomas Hardy as I love his books, Marilyn Monroe so I can ask her who really bumped her off, and Bobby Moore so I could thank him for 1966.
We’d have salad sandwiches with lots of black olives and maybe a bit of houmous. To drink….Belvoir Pear and Elderflower cordial!!

My perfect picnic would be atop some cliffs by moonlight one warm summer night. We’d have soft music playing from the car stereo parked a way behind us, a soft rug to cuddle on as we nibble on an assortment of cheeses with some crackers and some lovely plump mixed summer berries. As we watch the waves there could only be one drink to wash it all down, leaving us feeling refreshed and happy, Belvoir Elderflower Cordial!

My perfect picnic….The location would be on top of the Empire State Building, then at least I will have conquered America, overcame my fear of heights and my guests and I would not be disturbed. We can just sit and watch the world go by!
My guests would include; Mr Kipling (so he can bring his exceedingly great cakes), Jamie Oliver can also come to rustle up some great food, we will have a laugh with Norman Wisdom, Ant & Dec and Peter Kay too. Leona Lewis would sing some soulfull songs as I gaze into the eyes of Brad Pitt. After our picnic, some of our other guests…the England Football team will then have a five-a-side footie match and the first goal scorer gets to snog the picnic hostess….ME!!…and we’ll sleep under the stars!

A picnic for St George’s Day,
By the river, a sunny day,
To a pretty Cotswold town I’d go,
Still & quiet, just me & my beau,
    Home-made sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs,
    Sausage rolls & chicken legs,
And at the end, to help us digest,
Some Belvoir cordial – Ginger’s best!

We’d picnic on a secluded beach,
On a rug spread out on the sand,
There’d be cheese and crusty bread to eat,
And Belvoir Presse close at hand,

No other guests would be invited,
To our cosy little seaside brunch,
For we always have the sweetest picnics,
Just me and my poodle, Munch.

My perfect picnic would be with my family on a beach in Britain. We would do swimming, skimming stones, looking in rock pools and have sand in our sandwiches (is this why they are called sandwiches).
The picnic does not need to be fancy, just being together and making great childhood memories is enough.
Oh yeah, a couple of cold Belvoir drinks would go down a treat!

My favourite place for a picnic is up on the New Forest where there’s plenty of space for everyone and the horses. The Two Ronnies filmed a picnic sketch there many years ago and it would be perfect if they were still there to join the fun! The horses can have their own picnic blanket so they don’t eat our picnic. I’d take plenty of sandwiches because there’s nothing wrong with an old-fashioned picnic and they’re one of the easiest things to eat. Plenty of Belvoir elderflower cordial to refresh and to keep happy those who don’t drink the champagne that’s on ice!

BY GEORGE LET’S HAVE A PICNIC

By George let’s have a picnic – cos the summer’s almost here,
Grab the thermos and the blanket and the cucumber sandwiches – dear,
The strawberries and sausage rolls and p’raps some choccy cake,
And don’t forget the Belvoir – cos there’ll be a thirst to slate.

Now shall we try the local park or head off to the coast,
Well our parkland is quite pleasant I am rather proud to boast,
The kids can take a bat and ball and have a run around,
Burning off a little energy as they exercise our hound.

Now shall we have the picnic straight away – as soon as we arrive?
Devour our tasty goodies – then sit and watch the weight creep on my thighs?
Or shall we masticate a bit and take a little stroll,
Picking out the perfect spot and drawing on memories of picnics of old.

Now where’d I put the napkins – can you go find the car keys,
And grab one or two picnic chairs – it’ll save your father’s knees,
Oh what a lovely family outing – now isn’t that a pip,
Dear God …. Where is my brolly cos I think I felt it spit!?*

With a spread containing pure romance…. Strawberries, Oysters, Caviar to name but a few…. Whilst sitting back and relaxing with a bottle of the finest Champagne money can buy…… Pure Heaven.x.x.

Nothing beats a picnic in the counrtyside at this time of year when the new growth and blossom is so glorious! It must be a sunny warm day when my friends and I will spontaneously make our plans in the morning. We’ll all bring a contribution – so, no fancy-pantsy gourmet recipes, just whatever we have on hand or a quick trip to the shops – maybe some french bread, cheese, cold meats, pate, friut, and some little pots of chocolate mousse. And to drink, I’ll make up a batch of
Dragon’s Breath cocktail sans the gin – we’ll have a least two DDs (Designated Drivers) and the others can add the gin if they wish…an ode to summer!

My picnic would be with the whole family (so we’d need several rucksacks), alongside a picturesque unfished lake on a sunny day with just a light ripple on the water. venue- charlecote park, my favourite national trust property, we have been visiting so long we are on 3rd generation traditions- there is a smartie tree(honest guv) in the maze, so the kids have to find it and see if there are any smarties under it.

guests- my best friend as she makes a mean chocolate cake, and her lovely kids to keep mine entertained, and my WHOLE family, as in an ideal world they would all get on and not live scattered all over the UK!

food- hmmn, I think mostly cake, with my ginger presse – ginger cordial, sparkling water, ice and a sprig of mint.

As nice as Scotland is for picnics – generally it ends up with everyone sitting in the car munching on soggy sandwiches waiting for the rain to go off so we can rescue the soaking wet tartan blanket – my ideal picnic would have to be on a huge yacht in the middle of a turquoise sea – sounds nice eh!! We would be eating prawn cocktail, then black forrest gateau for dessert ,washed down with a huge Dragon’s breath cocktail. Padraig Harrington would be there teaching us a thing or two on the onboard golf course (as you do) and just because he looks really nice. U2 would be singing for us, but Bono would be banned from talking and of course we couldn’t leave out Bear Grylls incase we ended up shipwrecked on an island and had to live off berries and frogs.

My picnic would be on the perfect green lawn, no bugs and no allergies, on Mars with the twin moons in the background.

With me would be my two very best friends who I haven’t seen in a very long time, and we’d probably need a laptop with wireless as things sometimes tend to get geeky and need illustrations of dorky hockey commercials or macros with adorable polar bears.

We’d eat Spam fried rice (no Spam for me though) made and sent by another friend of ours who couldn’t make it. And then have no-calorie sundaes for desert. Of course, we’d be drinking Belvoir.

Delicious healthy snacks prepared ….. (neither wanting to get fatter!)

Belvoir cocktails are essential! I’d serve in sparkling glasses
Only the best will do for two ‘canny’ Geordie lasses.

BY GEORGE! LET’S HAVE A PICNIC!

In my dreams, I’m packing hampers,
Filled with caviar, Belvoir and champers.
A handsome prince in a sweeping cape,
Moistens his lips with some Muscat Grape,
Before carrying me off on his dashing white horse,
To enjoy a fruitsome picnic of course after course.
He holds my hand as we sip chilled Belvoir,
Before crushing me juicily with ardent “fervoir”!
But, alas! Alack! My alarm clock goes!
Where are my maidenly, demure, wee clothes?
    I dash to the mirror-what a bummer!
I’m an ordinary mum in the British summer.
I pack my cool bag and summon my kids,
I ensure all my presses have nice tight lids.
We jump in the car, setting off at full throttle,
Before stopping to sip from our Belvoir bottles.
We’ve Dragon’s Breath Cocktails, they’re fruity and fun,
We eat soggy sandwiches and stroll in the sun.
We’re fortified by flavinoids, we never feel annoyed,
Our entente is so cordiale at the day we’ve just enjoyed.
The bairns are bathed, we’re home at last, the picnic’s packed away,
Belvoir’s brought its sparkle to another summer day!

    “100% good” friends,
No nasties, no fakes, just jolly good blends.
By the Belvoir Springs we would sit
    Whilst lemongrass we sniff.
Feasting on fresh fruit and flowers
    We picnic for hours.
“Good stuff” to drink, be it orange or blue,
All natural and delicious – “It’s corny but true!”

I can’t get out much now but I still enjoy a picnic! The perfect setting is a blanket and cushions on the living room floor while me and my hubby eat luxury treats and drink Rasberry and Rose Cordial. It’s a lovely setting and I can forget about the big mean world while we feed each other chocolate covered strawberries!

My dream picnic would be a recreation of the picnic at Virginia Water lake where my husband kissed me for the first time! There would be salad, quiche, cherries and Raspberry and Rose Belvoir Fruit Farms cordial (of course).

It would be a sunny day but with a heavy sun shower that had us running for cover under a tall pine tree in a secluded garden…Perfect

My perfect picnic would have to be
Perched on a hill in the Serengeti
Under the shade of a baobab tree
With a camera, best friends and my husband-to-be
We’d watch wild animals roaming free
And as the sun warmed the earth, we’d all agree
A glass of Belvoir’s Lemongrass, Elderflower or Blueberry
    Would complete the magic deliciously

My picnic would take place in the sand dunes above a cornish beach – close enough to hear the sea, but not get sand in our sarnies! My party would include my partner and our two children.

Our picnic food would celebrate the best of English food:
*Fresh crusty bread and cakes from our local bakers.
*Thick ham, sausage rolls and hand raised pork pie from our butchers.
*A variety of delicious English cheeses, pickles and crisps from the deli.
*Our favourite Belvoir drinks – Organic ginger beer for him, Organic presse – blood orange and mandarin for me and our eldest daughter and Organic lemonade for our youngest daughter.

    What could be more perfect?

My perfect picnic would be in Central Park New York.

Guests would be Stephen Fry and for female company that fan of laid back dining, Victoria Beckham.

    Zac Efron for my dessert.

Food would be a lovely deli mix, cute sandwiches, nibbles with olives, with Belvoir cordial to sip in the sunshine.
    It’s be perfect !

My perfect picnic would be me, my boyfriend and a couple of our friends, on midsummer’s day in the ruins of the Caerleon amphitheatre. The menu would include gravlax, seafood, cheeses and plenty of bread, with lots of soft fruits and chocolate cake. We would wash this down with raspberry and rose cordial spiked with champagne and remain, listening to mellow music and chatting until the sun came down, when we would go for a wander into the town.

on a private island you see.

    Just me and Brad Pitt,
    That would do nicely.

    We’ll drink belvoirs ginger cordial,
    And watch the sun set.

It would be with my family, at rutland water, as i think you should always make the best of who and what you have around you. A picnic is what you make it, so great food and drink with my family at a beautiful local spot would be a great day out

I’d like to have a rerun of my picnic last week, me and my husband took our seven month old daughter for her first ever picnic. We sat in the park in York, on the grass, in the sunshine and my daughter decorated everything in sight with rice cake and tried to eat the grass!

I would obviously take some Belvoir fruit farms elderflower cordial this time though!

That fruity picnic scene by Manet
Where I’d pose with Olivier Martinez
    OOH LA LA
    Sipping champagne avec BELVOIR!

My picnic would be in the Pennine countryside of West Yorkshire, which is particularly beautiful. I’d like as my chief guest Peter Sallis from Last of the Summer Wine as I think he’d know more out of the way spots than most from his 35 years of filming the programme in the area. He’d also have a great fund of stories about the cast (past and present) which would be fascinating to hear. I’d feed us on prawn mayo sandwiches made from my homemade wholemeal bread, my cheese scones, iced fairy cakes baked at home, a small selection of English cheeses with Carrs crackers, some fruit – grapes, chunks of melon (water melon if in season), bananas and apples, all washed down with some refreshing Belvoir elderflower cordial.

    Dream picnic?
I’d love a lazy sunday lunch with Sir Christopher Wren on the backs in Cambridge. It’d be good to get author Anthony Trollope and my favourite monarch Richard III along too. And who could resist a guest appearance from Colin Firth?
I reckon they’d like the traditional picnic fare – cucumber sandwiches and strawberries and cream washed down with ginger cordial.
With all that talent we could discuss everything under the sun, literally. Perfect.

I’d have my whole extended family with me – we’d go somewhere with a wide open sapce to play football or frisbee, there would be picnic tables and a barbeque area. We’d have sandwiches, salad and fruit as well as vegetarian sausages and burger for the barbequeue. To drink we would have lots of cool Belvoir cordial

Newstead Abbey is our favourite place for a picnic if you are ready to fend off greedy peacocks. Perhaps the spirit of Byron would join us, and his dog Boatswain could play with our Max. Cucumber and chicken sandwiches with strawberries to follow, partnered with Elderflower Cordial and fizz. I suspect Byron and my partner would prefer it with champagne, but sparkling water and wit would be enough for me.
